ONAM Festival
Onam is a very important festival in Kerala celebrated in the month of August or September, Onam has a historical tale correlated with its source. The tale goes like this, there was a King named Mahabali, ruled in Kerala once upon a time. He was a model of human kindness and helped the poor in needy situations. He dismayed a very classy character and he was well known for honesty. There was no dacoity and killing at that point in time. There was no quarrel among people and his period of the dynasty has written in golden leaf. Lord Vishnu decided to check his integrity and honesty and paid a visit to the Earth, Lord Vishnu was not getting enough space to lay his legs, then Lord Vishnu asked Mahabali how to get rid of the problem, then Mahabali who is very lenient showed his head where Lord Vishnu can put his legs. When Lord Vishnu by changing his style as Vamana put Lord Vishnu's legs on the Head of Mahabali, Mahabali was not alive but before Mahabali's death, Lord Vishnu promised him and blessed him to visit Kerala every year on the day of his death. This is the small story tale behind the celebration of Onam. Also, Onam is related to the sowing and cutting of seeds of paddy in Kerala. On the day of Onam as a part of celebrations, all are wearing new dresses and an excellent feast(Sadya) with a variety of dishes(curries) like Boiled Rice, Sambar, Rasam, Avial, Elisseri, Pulisseri, Olan, Thoran, Achhar, Puli-Inji, Papad and kheer like Pradhaman, Ada Pradhaman & Paal Payasam to support and enrich the elegance of the celebrations.
